Overview In California, seven out of eight schools do not have professional library staffing for half a day or more. And while the national ratio of library media specialists to students is 1:889, California’s ratio is 1:5,965 (2004 - 2005 CBEDS Report and Digest of Education Statistics and Tables and Figures, National Center for Education Statistics). Library media teachers are in demand in many areas state wide!Recent studies demonstrate that a school library media program with a full-time library media teacher, support staff and a strong computer network leads to higher student achievement regardless of the community's social and economic factors. The Library Media Teacher Services Credential is a special credential that allows you to be a library media teacher in any K-12 school in California. You must have either a multiple or single subject credential to pursue a library credential, but the library credential is valid in grades K-12 regardless of the level of your teaching credential. Benefits Participants in the Library Media program will have an opportunity to: - receive a Library Media Teacher Services credential in one year

Program Structure There are 11 required courses in the Library Media program for a total of 31 units of graduate level academic credit. Courses are offered on Friday evenings and Saturdays to be compatible with the schedules of classroom teachers. Each course is offered only once over a twelve-month period and participants must be committed to completing the program within this time frame. Letter grades, A-F, are assigned for all courses with the exception of the field study. Each course carries academic credit and will appear on an official Sacramento State transcript. Admission and Registration Admission to Sacramento State is required for enrollment in the Library Media program. Completed Sacramento State and credential applications, with required supporting documents, must be submitted during the spring semester prior to the program’s start in August. Terry and Penny Kastanis Library Media Teacher Scholarship The Terry and Penny Kastanis Library Media Teacher Scholarship purpose is to support students pursuing careers in library media instruction through Sacramento State's College of Continuing Education. Jewel Gardiner Memorial Scholarship The Jewel Gardiner Memorial Scholarship is intended as a support for those northern section residents who are enrolled in a Library Media Teacher Services Credential Program in a California library school that is approved by the California State Department of Education. A one-time award in the amount of $1,000 is awarded in the fall, spring and summer sessions. Students may apply as often as they desire but preference is given to first time applications.
