Overview As California’s community colleges struggle to meet the growing demands for service with shrinking financial resources, they face a potential crisis of leadership. Researchers estimate that at least one-half of the current community college senior administrators will leave office or retire within the next decade. At the same time, there is a serious lack of dedicated leadership training programs for two-year mid through high-level administrators and deans, classified staff and faculty leaders. Currently, there exist only a handful of programs to help prepare educational leaders for the difficult task of leading community colleges into the next century. California State University, Sacramento can meet this urgent need for community college leadership training through its California Community College Leadership Certificate Program. Audience This program is ideal for: - Current community college faculty, deans, classified staff and administrators who aspire to leadership positions and/or want to take on a greater leadership role in their campus community.
- Individuals who are seeking a career change into California community colleges and want to increase their knowledge and skill set in understanding and working within California’s community college system.
- CSUS graduate students who want to obtain both their master’s degree in higher education leadership (or other topic) and this certificate of academic achievement.
Program Structure The California Community College Leadership Certificate Program consists of four courses for a total of 12 units of graduate-level academic credit. Successful completion of all four courses is required to earn a certificate. Participants may choose to take one or more individual courses for professional development without committing to the entire certificate program. The course delivery model includes a blend of classroom meetings and online instruction to accommodate participants' busy schedules. Classroom instruction will be led by a dynamic team of recognized speakers and scholars from community colleges and universities as well as from government, business and non-profit sectors. Participants receive letter grades, A-F, for all courses with the exception of Community College Leadership Practicum. Each course carries academic credit and will appear on an official CSUS transcript. Formal admission to CSUS is not required for enrollment in this program. Courses in the California Community College Leadership Certificate Program have been approved to meet elective requirements in the CSUS Masters in Arts in Higher Education Leadership, Community College concentration.
