Payroll Administration Certificate Program

Why take this program?

Payroll. Such an important function and one much anticipated by most employees. But, as a payroll professional, you know there's so much more to the job than computing checks. You must keep current with the legislative and regulatory environment, be knowledgeable in all aspects of payroll administration, and stay abreast of changes in related technologies. You must also be proficient in all aspects of taxation and tax reporting and be able to interact with MIS, human resources, benefits and accounting in a payroll environment.

The Payroll Administration certificate program teaches the necessary skills to perform these functions. The Payroll Administration Certificate Program covers the body of knowledge that is defined by the American Payroll Association (APA) as the critical skills for today's payroll professional. Participants also gain an understanding of the regulations and best practices for administering payroll in California.

If you are new to the payroll industry, a seasoned professional wanting to enhance your current skill set or an individual interested in preparing for the CPP or FPC exams, these courses are well suited for you.

Program Structure

The Payroll Administration Certificate Program is comprised of four courses for a total of 100 classroom hours, representing 10.0 continuing education units (CEUs). The courses combine lecture, small group interaction and hands-on computer activities, presented in a real world, problem-solving format that encourages rapid learning and application to on-the-job situations.

Prerequisites

In order to ensure that all participants have the appropriate skill levels to successfully complete the Payroll Administration Certificate program, Basic Payroll Fundamentals is a required program prerequisite for all students. Basic Payroll Fundamentals teaches "federal" law as opposed to California State law, which generally supersedes federal law for an employer who pays California employees. Participants who are able to provide documentation that demonstrates that they are actively working in payroll administration job classifications may waive the Basic Payroll course to enroll into the Intermediate and/or Advanced courses only. The Basic Payroll course is mandatory in addition to the California Payroll Administration course to complete the Certificate Program.

Professional Designations

The Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation, the APA's highest-level certification, recognizes those individuals who have achieved a significant level of proficiency in this professional discipline. This certification is granted for a five-year period, at which time recertification is required.

Recognizing the breadth of knowledge and length of experience required to obtain the CPP designation, the Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC), to better serve all levels of the payroll community. The FPC certification is granted for a three-year period, at which time recertification is required.
