Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic
An EMT-Paramedic works at a more advanced level of the EMS profession, requiring additional training. To be eligible for the Paramedic program, one must have completed an EMT-Basic program (EMS 600 or equivalent), have one year of pre-hospital experience, and pass an entrance exam and interview before starting EMT-Paramedic courses.
Paramedics are the advanced life support (ALS) providers of the EMS industry. Paramedics can find employment opportunities in fire departments, private ambulance companies and hospitals.

Program Structure
The first section of the program is didactic (EMS 700), offering students the opportunity to learn Advanced Life Support practices in relation to paramedicine. Students will master anatomy and physiology, cardiology, respiration, general medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, trauma, and neurology.
The second section is a clinical experience (EMS 701) where students are placed in different hospitals around the region. This section offers students the opportunity to practice and hone their skills in preparation for their field internship.
The final section is the field internship (EMS 702) in which students assume the role of a paramedic under supervision of a preceptor. A minimum of 480 hours must be completed in addition to 40 ALS contacts.

How to register
Please complete and submit the online Paramedic application and pay the $25.00 non-refundable application fee, online with a credit card.
Applications must be submitted by the deadline. Applicants must pass a 2 hour entrance exam and attend a follow-up interview to be approved for the Paramedic Program. Approved applicants may then register for EMS 700, EMS 701 and EMS 702.
For spring 2010, application due date: 2/1. Entrance Exams: 2/22, 2/24, 2/26 (10 a.m. - 12 p.m. or 12 - 2 p.m.) Interviews: 3/1 (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.)

National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT)
Candidates must enroll at Sacramento State for the practical exam or for skill retesting. Students may retest on the same day. Skill retests are $50 per skill.
We highly encourage every candidate to sign up for the Advanced Level Prep course, offering the latest updates from the American Heart Association. The course also reviews current standard practices, as well as critical failures commonly observed with previous examinees.
Testing fees for EMT-Intermediate 85/99:
I/85 or I/99 full practical exam: $325
I/85 or I/99 retest: $50 per skill
NREMT Advanced Level Prep Course: $50
Testing fees for EMT-Paramedic:
EMT-P full practical exam: $325
EMT-P retest: $50 per skill
NREMT Advanced Level Prep Course: $50
Cancellation policy:
National Registry requires Sacramento State to reserve exams for all prospective candidates three weeks prior to the exam date. Therefore, it is necessary for Sacramento State to enforce the following policy: There will be no refunds and no rescheduling of the National Registry exam. Submission of registration form and payment indicate acceptance of this policy.
Note to students:
Candidates are required to remain on site during the practical skills testing and are strongly encouraged to bring a bag lunch or small snacks on this day.
