OverviewThe College of Continuing Education at Sacramento State is currently the only school in the California State University system that offers Prehospital Education courses which include Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT Basic) and our Paramedic program. These courses demonstrate how to provide emergency health care beyond the ambulance while preparing students for certification by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Program participants gain the necessary education to be successful in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Industry. We offer quality education for the EMS workforce of tomorrow. The Prehospital Education program is approved by the Sacramento County Emergency Medical Services Agency and the State of California Emergency Medical Services Authority. The Prehospital Education program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

To contact CoAEMSP: Emergency Medical Technician-BasicProgram StructureIn this 9 week course, students will receive basic life support training skills needed to become a certified EMT. The classroom structure is divided into lecture and lab time where students get a hands-on learning experience to practice rescue scenario skills. Students will have a primary lead instructor on lecture days. During lab time, students will break into groups with several skills instructors who will provide basic life support training on the particular lessons learned that day. Students will be learning from practicing EMTs and Paramedics who work in the field everyday. There are no pre-requisites for this course. Our one year paramedic program will train and prepare students on how to give advanced life support (ALS) to patients in emergency situations. The first section of the program is didactic (EMS 700), offering students the opportunity to learn ALS practices in relation to paramedicine. Application Process
To be eligible for the Paramedic program, applicants must have an EMT certification through the National Registry and show proof of completion in an EMT Basic course. It is preferred, but not required, for applicants to be currently employed as an EMT or have at least one year of EMT experience. Important Dates To Know:

National Registry Advanced Level Skills ExamThe Prehospital Education program is proud to offer the National Registry Advanced Level Skills exam once a month. The examination will consist of twelve (12) separate skills, presented in a scenario-type format to approximate the abilities of the Paramedic to function in the out-of-hospital setting. All skills have been developed in accordance with the National Standard EMT-Basic Curriculum, the behavioral and skill objectives of the 1999 EMT-Paramedic National Standard Training Curriculum, and current A.H.A. guidelines. The process is a formal verification of the candidate's "hands-on" abilities and knowledge. Candidates will be required to remain on site during the practical skills examination and strongly encouraged to bring a bag lunch or small snacks for the day. This test is for AEMT, Intermediate-85, Intermediate-99, and Paramedic candidates. Candidates should wear loose, comfortable clothing. Exam check-in will take place starting at 9:00 am. National Registry Advanced Level Skills Preparation CourseA preparation course and exam walk through will be offered the afternoon prior to the exam. Participants will learn skills to be successful in the National Registry Advanced Level Skills Examination, including information on equipment, format, test environment and best practices for approaching the practical examination. Instruction will include the latest updates and current standard practices from the American Heart Association; an overview of each skill station and how to properly prepare for this form of testing; common errors that can lead to failure of a skills station; and certain pitfalls to avoid during the testing process. This test prep course is for AEMT, Intermediate-85, Intermediate-99, and Paramedic candidates. The preparation course takes place between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm the day before the exam. National Registry Advanced Level Skills Exam RetestCandidates will be allowed three (3) full attempts to pass a respective skill examination (one "full attempt" is defined as completing all skills and two retesting opportunities if so entitled). Candidates will be required to remain on site during the practical skills examination and strongly encouraged to bring a bag lunch or small snacks for the day. Candidates should wear loose, comfortable clothing. This retest is for AEMT, Intermediate-85, Intermediate-99, and Paramedic candidates.
