Prehospital Education Programs: Emergency Medical Technician Courses

Program Structure

In this 9 week course, students will receive basic life support training skills needed to become a certified EMT. The classroom structure is divided into lecture and lab time where students get a hands-on learning experience to practice rescue scenario skills. Students will have a primary lead instructor on lecture days. During lab time, students will break into groups with several skills instructors who will provide basic life support training on the particular lessons learned that day. Students will be learning from practicing EMTs and Paramedics who work in the field everyday. There are no pre-requisites for this course. Students must be at least 18 years of age before the last class meeting of the session for which they register.

FAQ's

Has the program been approved?
Yes, the EMT program is approved as a provider by the Sacramento County Emergency Medical Services Agency.
When did the program begin?
The Sacramento State Prehospital Education program began in October of 2009.
What are the pre-requisites for the program?
There are no pre-requisites for this course. Students must be at least 18 years of age before the last class meeting of the session for which they register.
Am I required to apply to Sacramento State as a student?
No, students are not required to apply to the University or meet the CSUS admissions criteria. Students can register directly to the program online at www.cce.csus.edu/ems or by calling registration at 916-278-4433 extension 2.
What is the cost of this program?
The cost of the program, which includes your textbook, and program polo, is $1,100. (Program costs may be subject to change).
What textbook do you use?
Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, 10th Edition.
When will I receive my book and polo?
You will receive both on the first day of class. Upon registering make sure to email your polo shirt size to the Program Coordinator at kramirez@csus.edu.
Do students have to pay to park?
Yes, weekly parking permits can be purchased at Napa Hall for $10. The class is 9 weeks long, so the total for parking would be approximately $90.
Is there a payment plan available?
No, students must pay the $1,100 course fee at the time of registration.
Is the coursework transferrable to another college or university?
No, unfortunately the EMT Basic course is not transferrable. The CSUS EMT program is a non-credit certificate program. There are no academic units granted for the course.
Are financial aid and student loans eligible for this program?
No, unfortunately this program does not qualify for financial aid or student loans. Why? Because this program is a non-credit certificate based program, financial aid and students loans do not qualify. Payment for the program will need to be made at the time of registration. No payment plans are available.
Do you accept VA/GI Bill money?
Yes, we accept VA/GI Bill money. You will need to contact Kim Smith in registration at the College of Continuing Education at 916-278-4433 extension 2 to get started with the appropriate paperwork.
Are students required to wear uniforms?
No, students are not required to wear a uniform to class, but you will be given a program polo which is to be worn on your ride along and during skills every Saturday.
How long is the program?
The EMT program is a 9 week long course. The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm-10pm and on Saturdays from 8am-5pm.
Does the program provide assistance in obtaining work after graduation?
The program does not provide job placement. However, you will get a chance to network with other students, as well as your instructors who all have careers working as a Paramedic or Firefighter.
