Summer Academies

Returning Summer 2013!

July 15-19 and July 22-26

Returning Academies:

  • Biotechnology: Explore the Colorful World of Biotech
  • Exploring Health Careers 101

Additions include:

  • Robotics Academy
  • Fire Academy
  • Fashion Academy

Summer 2013 will employ a new format with shorter courses (one week of half-days) to allow participants to attend multiple academies during the two week period.

Overview

Summer Academies provide high school students with the unique opportunity to explore various career paths during one-week, specialized courses while being introduced to the college experience.

Health Careers 101Health Careers 101 Academy:  July 15 -19; 1 - 5 p.m.

Students can determine whether a career in the health profession is suitable to their interests, talents and skills by researching various health professions and developing academic and career goals.  CPR certification included.

Fire AcademyFire Academy: July 15 – 19; 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Students will be taught the history, equipment and specialties in fire service and become CPR certified. Clear career pathways will be explored including ROP programs, associates degrees, paramedic training programs and bachelor’s degree programs.

Bio TechExplore the colorful world of Biotech:  July 22 – 26; 1 – 5 p.m.

Students will learn basic biotechnology concepts and skills by experimenting with DNA and proteins in the laboratory to study biofluorescence

RoboticsRobotics Academy: July 22 – 26; 1 – 5 p.m.

Study the Robotics branch of technology that deals with the design, construction, operation and application of robots and computer systems for their control, sensory feedback and information processing

FashionFashion Academy: July 22 – 26; 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

This course is designed to provide the student with a broad understanding of the fashion profession along with hands-on-experience in fashion illustration.  Students will learn how an idea becomes a product and how that product is marketed and eventually merchandised to the buying public.  In addition, students will learn how to create artful renderings of their own fashion designs.

Audience

Open to high school students who have completed the 8th grade.

Structure

Classes are offered on weekdays, Monday through Friday from July 15 - July 26, 2013.
