Instructors


Douglas Allen, M.A., has been teaching AP* Studio Art classes for over 25 years and is currently a Fine Arts Consultant for Jordan School District in Utah. He has been working with the College Board, both as an exam reader and consultant for the past eight years and has lead one-day workshops and five-day institutes nationally. Besides being an educator, Mr. Allen is also an accomplished artist and has many commissions for his paintings.

MaryAnne Bobrow, C.A.E., C.M.P., is the owner of an association and event management company. She teaches “Using 21st Century Technology to Plan Meetings and Events and Trade Shows and Exhibits” for the Sacramento State College of Continuing Education’s Meeting Planning Certificate Program and “Association Management and Trade Show Operations” in University of Nevada Las Vegas’ Distance Learning Degree Program.

Barbra Brooks-Barker, M.A., has been an active participant in the education of our youth for the past 30 years.  She has served as an outstanding English Literature and Composition teacher, a table leader and reader of AP* English Literature exams, and is one of the authors for The Vertical Teams Guide for English. She has served as a pre-AP* coordinator for the Elk Grove School District and currently serves the educational community as a National Consultant for the College Board as well as for her own private consulting company. 

George "Mike" Brunelle, M.A., has worked in vocational education in Sacramento City Unified School District for 31 years. During this time, he has worked extensively with special populations. He has been a site principal at an adult education vocational center, and is currently a director II in the career and technical preparation department.

Sherrie Carinci, M.B.A., Ed.D., is a scholar/researcher in the field of gender and multicultural patterns in the area of education, business and society. She is an associate professor for the College of Education and graduate coordinator for the Master of Arts Education, Gender Equity Studies emphasis at Sacramento State.

James Chasey, M.A., has taught economics in high school until 2002 and has been teaching economics part-time in college since 1985. He has studied in the Graduate School of Business of the University of Chicago as the Christa McAuliffe Fellow for the State of Illinois. He has been a grader and table leader for AP* Economics for the College Board. Mr. Chasey has written numerous works specifically for use in the teaching of AP* Economics. His main interest in presenting week-long summer institutes is to specifically structure the workshop to meet the needs of the participants.

Charles Davis, Ph.D., is a professor in the College of Business Administration at California State University, Sacramento.

Craig L. Duehring, M.S., P.E., P.M.P., has over 20 years experience in managing high profile projects, leading project teams, and outsourcing products and services. He utilizes PMI nationally recognized project management principles in the management of large and complex projects to achieve project success and gain professional recognition as a successful and competent project manager.

Matthew Ellington has taught AP* U.S. History for the last 16 years. He has been an AP* exam reader since 2000. He is an endorsed AP* and Pre-AP* workshop consultant and has presented numerous one day and week-long workshops for the College Board.

Joy Florentino, C.M.P., has been active in the meetings industry since 1990 and has been with Marriott International the majority of  her career. Joy was awarded Supplier of the Year 1996 by SGMP (Society of Government Meeting Professionals Sacramento Chapter), and Supplier of the Year 2005-2006 by MPI/SSN (Meeting Professionals International Sacramento Sierra Nevada Chapter), Associate Member of the Year 2007 CalSAE (California Society of Association Executives) . She currently serves as President of MPI/SSN and Associate Vice Chair of CalSAE.

Dr. Lani Fraizer Professor, practitioner, writer and business owner at the intersection of social entrepreneurship, information and communication technologies and workforce development; Lani Fraizer champions cultivation of tech-savvy-leadership skills to create meaningful career opportunities for working generations. Lani earned her Master's degree in Information Technology from Carnegie Mellon University's H. John Heinz III College, completed her doctoral studies with emphasis in social entrepreneurship, learning technologies and organizational leadership from Pepperdine University's Graduate School of Education and Psychology, and earned a Master's degree in Educational Technology from California State University East Bay and Baccalaureate degree in Psychology from California State University Sacramento. She is Founding Managing Director of Synergies in Sync and Chief Learning Officer at Meucci & Company. Her most recent accomplishments include driving ICT-based business ideas to operational delivery across 13 global regions and 78 countries. As a Skoll World Forum Social Entrepreneur and Global Ambassador for Anita Borg Institute, Lani champions women in computing and ICT-integrated changemaking education. She is noted for her recent book on ICT-integrated social entrepreneurship education entitled, "Developing Lifelong Changemakers."

Sandra Franco, M.A., has been the Modern Languages Department chairperson at University High School since 1992 and has been a teacher of Spanish and AP* Spanish Language courses for more than 20 years. She has been an exam reader for 10 years and has taught numerous weeklong summer programs. In 2006, she received the "Exemplary AP* Teacher" award from the College Board.

Patricia Gaggiani, M.A., has been a teacher in Denver Public Schools since 1970. She created the district’s Advanced Placement English Language and Composition course in 1985 and taught it full time until 2001. Mrs. Gaggiani is now the director of the Writing Center at George Washington High School. She read the Language and Composition test from 2001 to 2007.

Susan Gerard, M.A., is the history department chairperson at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, WA. She has been teaching AP* European History for 25 years. She has been reading AP* exams since 1996 and has been a table leader since 2000 and has also taught AP* workshops and institutes since this time. She is the recipient of several teaching awards: VFW Teacher of the Year; Stratford Foundation for Educational Leadership in History; Spokane Public Schools Distinguished Teacher Award; and in 2001 she received a Gates Foundation Teacher Leadership Grant. In 2007, she earned a National Board Professional Teaching Certification in adolescent and young adult history/social studies and received the Spokane Public Schools Equity Award. In 2009, she won a Microsoft Peer Coaching Grant.

Alex Gordin has been teaching English and AP* English at Cleveland High School in Portland since 1986. He has been a board member of the Oregon Council Teachers of English since 1994 and was the chairperson for the NCTE Spring National Conference in 2001. He has been a College Board consultant for Pre-AP* English and Vertical Teams since 2000.

Steve Gottlieb is a veteran law enforcement officer and the author of Crime Analysis: From First Report to Final Arrest. He provides consulting services to law enforcement agencies throughout the world.

Michael Grabow has over 20 years of experience in human resource development and management with global organizations. He specializes in creating workplace training and development programs and has a passion for seeing the human potential within organizations realized, released and renewed.

Karen Harold-Husted is principle of Professional Training Partners, a training, consulting and coaching firm. She has consulted with individuals, corporations, law enforcement agencies and nonprofit groups to provide educational solutions and conflict resolutions initiatives for 14 years.

Jes Hernandez, M.S., has been teaching Physics and AP* Physics at Lawrence Hill High School - Math, Science, and Technology School in Massachusetts for the past ten years. He has been an adjunct professor of Physics at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill, MA. He currently is a reader for the AP* Physics exam and has been a College Board consultant, teaching one and five-day workshops thoughout the country. In 2010, he served as a member of the AP* Physics Development Committee with the College Board.

William M. Hughes, M.S.C., has over 18 years of employment program training experience with an emphasis on career development in vocational education, school-to-work, ex-offender bridges to employment, and foster youth. He also has several years experience as a public school administrator, school counselor, and vocational education teacher.

Michael R. Jones is a licensed psychologist and a marriage, family and child counselor. He received his Ph.D. from La Jolla University and a Master's and Bachelor's from California State University, Los Angeles.

Dohn Kissinger, M.B.A., Ph.D., P.M.P., helps organizations plan projects so they finish on time and within budget. He has over 25 years of business and project management experience, and is the developer of The 7 Steps to Project Success™. He was awarded an MBA at California State University, Sacramento and a Ph.D. in Engineering from Purdue University. He is certified as a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) in both Microsoft Project and Microsoft Project Server, as a Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) in Enterprise Project Management, and as a Project Management Professional (PMP) by the Project Management Institute (PMI).

John LaRocco, J.D. is an associate professor for the CSUS Organizational Behavior and Environment Department.

Kris Lea, MSOD, CEO and Principal of Zygos Consulting. (October 12, 2009) Kris Lea is working as a training developer for Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) in Sacramento, CA. Her role involves developing and delivering a large-scale training program for an IT implementation for a local state agency. Kris has worked as a training professional in many industries: high tech (Intel Corporation); healthcare (Kaiser Permanente), and now, in transportation (SAIC). She also works part time with CSUS, College of Continuing Education (CCE) in various programs. She has an undergraduate degree in Information Systems from the University of Phoenix; a certificate in Instructional Design from CSUS-CCE; and a Masters of Science in Organization Development from University of San Francisco. Jannene Litchfield, M.B.A., SPHR is a human resources professional with 20 years experience. She specializes in management development, strategic planning, organizational development, employee relations, and retention. She is also skilled in creating and implementing business metrics, management and employee practices, compensation systems, facilitating, and employee communication.

Denis "Joe" McCarthy, M.A., is a retired instructor who taught in the department of educational administration and policy studies at California State University, Sacramento.

Mark Mitchell has been an instructor with the College of Continuing Education since the Fall of 1986, teaching in the Telecommunications Management, Purchasing Management, Contract Management and the Project Management Programs. He is a credentialed California Teacher with a Lifetime Teaching Credential. He works for the Department of Corrections, in the Contract and Procurement Section and has previously worked in the Project Management Office. He has worked for the State for over 23 years, and has been responsible for some of the largest state procurements in recent years, as well as Project Oversight for the Consolidated Information Technology Project at CDCR. . Mark lives in Folsom, California. His wife, Nancy, also works for the State at the Department of Motor Vehicles. He has two sons, Brian age 28 and Douglas, age 20. Mark is an avid traveler, having traveled to 5 continents. He also enjoys painting and other forms of art.

Scott Nipper is a training professional with over 20 years experience as an instructor, facilitator, training program manager, instructional designer, curriculum developer, and technical training manager. As the Worldwide Training Program Manager at Intel Corp, Scott drove Intel’s e-learning instructional design strategy and directed a team of internal and external groups in providing engaging instructional interactivities. Scott is currently driving the design, development, and implementation of instructionally sound classroom and web-based training as the Technical Training Manager, North America for Barco, Inc. Scott has instructional design experience in several industries including high tech, healthcare, environmental engineering, and entertainment. Scott is an adjunct faculty member for several nationally ranked universities and for the past 12 years has been teaching a variety of technology-based courses in Information Technology, Computer Science, Human Resources, and Business. Scott holds a B.S. in Applied Management from Azusa Pacific University and an MBA with a concentration in Computer Information Systems from Golden Gate University.

Rich Overton is a certified ICI Instructor who currently teaches in the ICI Homicide and ICI Robbery Investigation courses. He is a 27 plus year Investigator with Sacramento Police Department.

David Platt, Ph.D., has been a fulltime mathematics faculty member at Front Range Community College since August, 2000. He has served as an AP* Exam Reader from 1991 – 1998, and from 2000 – 2006; and as a Table Leader from 2007 to the present. He has taught AP* Summer Institutes for the College Board from 1992 – 1996, and from 2003 to the present. He has also presented AP* Professional Development Workshops for the College Board from 1991 – 1998, and from 2002 to the present. His publications include a module in a pre-calculus mathematics reform textbook and an introductory computer programming textbook.

Ken Porush, M.Ed., teaches chemistry and AP* Chemistry at Los Gatos High School near San Jose, CA. He is a College Board consultant for AP* Chemistry and serves as a reader for the AP* Chemistry exam. He has also been a reader for the Praxis exam, has worked on the 2003 ACS HS Test Development Committee, and has been included in Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

Gary Slavit, P.M.P., is a founder of Chambray Advisors which provides training, human resources, technology, and general business consulting that specializes in helping very small businesses, startups, and non-profit organizations. The company also provides project management services to all size businesses. He has over 25 years of experience in business, consulting, information technology, and project management.

Robert Smidt, Ph.D., is professor and former chair of the Statistics Department at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he was recently named Distinguished Faculty. Dr. Smidt has worked in the AP* Statistics program as a grader and table leader for the AP* Statistics exam, and has presented one-day and week-long workshops to AP* Statistics high school teachers. As a consultant, he has worked with the Department of Defense, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Tenera, Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, Bechtel Power Corporation among many others. He contributed to journals such as Biometrics, Journal of Clinical Neuropsychology, Medical Anthropology, Journal of the Lepidopterists' Society to name just a few.

Louise Stymeist, M.S., has been involved in career and technical education for more than 15 years. She is an experienced classroom teacher, program administrator and small business owner. Working in public education has intensified her passion for powerful teaching, curriculum development, standards integration, project-based learning, and program development. She is currently the ROP coordinator for the Sacramento City Unified School District.

Bill Teeple, MBA, Masters of Aeronautical Science, and Doctor of Business Administration (Candidate Status). Bill has over 29 years of experience teaching college at both the undergraduate and graduate level. He develops and teaches courses in business administration, contracting, marketing, project management, quality, safety and accident investigation, supply chain management, and aerospace management. As an instructor and course developer for California State University Sacramento College of Continuing Education (CSUS CCE), he developed the following courses: Caltrans earthwork and drainage courses, Caltrans A&E training program (3 courses), developed on line training program for contract management (4 courses) and currently updating, analyst project management, executive leadership project management course, and two advanced contract management courses. Course developer for major update to the Caltrans’ on line project management program and developed Instructional Design for E-Learning Program course” Designing Instructional Content.” In addition, Bill is a senior counselor, instructor, and course developer for The Federal Technology Center providing assistance and training to small business owners. Bill retired from Department of Defense civil service with 31 years of service.

Margie Tomenko is a practicing project manager with over 10 years PM experience. She has worked for Tandem Computers, DST Output, and currently, for Computer Deductions, Inc. Margie earned her PMP certification from Project Management Institute (PMI) and her Bachelors degree in Computer Science from Purdue University. After obtaining the Community College teaching credential, Margie has been teaching on-line and in-person classes for over 15 years, both Project Management as well as computer related courses. Project Management is a natural for Margie - the multi-tasking, the people interfacing, the coordination and creative thinking all work to provide an adrenalin rush that makes working - and teaching - a pleasure! Dennis Wade, M.A., is principal of People Development Systems. His 16 years as an adult educator and his 10 years with Intel Corporation helped prepare him to provide employee development consulting services. Change management, leadership, team development, management skills, customer service, and performance-based training are some of his areas of expertise.

Jon Wilhite has over 14 years of training and development experience. He began his career with Walt Disney Company as a field trainer for The Disney Stores and then spent several years in the banking industry as a training facilitator and course designer. He developed training programs for call centers at First Nationwide Bank and Westamerica Bank. He is currently the training manager for Thunder Valley Casino, specializing in leadership and relationship breakthrough development training programs.

Francois Wolman, M.A., is a native of Paris, France. He has been teaching all levels of French, including AP* French, as well as AP* Psychology since 1990. He has served as an AP* exam reader for the College Board since 1996 and has taught one and five day workshops since 2000. He served as a member of the SAT II French Language test development committee from 1999-2005. He also is a member of AATF. He also is a tour director, taking adults and students throughout France during the month of June.

Kathryn "Gussie" Wyndham, MA, was one of the first 50 teachers to be trained by the College Board in the delivery of AP* World History workshops. She has served as a presenter throughout the western United States and outside of the United States (Columbia, Thailand, Canada) and has also been a speaker at the AP* Annual Conference. Ms. Wyndham has been a classroom teacher for 29 years and an AP* Reader for six years. She has been the recipient of various awards and recognitions, including a Fulbright scholarship, a Woodrow Wilson fellowship, a William Coe scholarship, and an East Asian Institute scholarship.

Joan Zeglarski, M.H.R.O.D., is a partner in HRT Associates. She has more than 25 years experience in human resources, organization development management, consulting and training in both the public and private sectors.
