The California Diabetes Summit

As the California Diabetes Program gets ready to commemorate its 30th anniversary in 2011, planning is underway for the second California Diabetes Summit. The summit will be held in Long Beach on September 8, 2011 with an evening networking reception on September 7th.

The first summit surpassed attendance goals and demonstrated the importance of having an event of this type that brings together California’s preeminent diabetes prevention and control professionals as well as leaders in policy, systems change, environmental approaches, health communications and health systems. In 2009, more than 250 attended the summit in Sacramento to hear colleagues share information ranging from how to both prevent and manage the diabetes crisis to successful community resources for improving quality care.

I have been teaching health care professionals about diabetes for over 20 years, but ever since I attended the California Diabetes Summit, my world vision of diabetes has changed in many ways,” said Beverly Thomassian, RN, BC-ADM, MPH, CDE, Assistant Clinical Professor, UCSF School of Nursing, President Diabetes Educational Services. “For so many years I have focused on counseling the individual, but now, I have changed my paradigm to include how social conditions and environmental factors in my community contribute to diabetes.”
