Project Overview
The California Department of Public Health, California Tobacco Control Program (CDPH/CTCP), in collaboration with its Point of Sale Practices Workgroup, plans to convene four (4) regional, interactive roundtables across the state addressing illegal sales of tobacco to minors, between 2009 and 2010. The first roundtable took place in Los Angeles County last September, and this is the second roundtable.
Main Objectives:
- The roundtables will be convened in geographically diverse areas of California for the purpose of exploring local problems and solutions around the enforcement of illegal sales of tobacco to minors laws, gathering and sharing best practices, and documenting and disseminating outcomes and lessons learned.
- The roundtables will be interactive in nature and tailored to the specific regions where they are being held.
- Regions will be selected based on a combination of need, level of enforcement activity, illegal sales statutes being enforced, and community support.
- Tools, tips, and lessons learned will be posted on CDHP/CTCP’s Strategic Tobacco Retail Effort (STORE) website. Other routes of dissemination, such as technical assistance calls, may be considered.
- Once all four roundtables have taken place, CDPH/CTCP may convene a statewide forum to share best practices, review key outcomes from the regional roundtables, and explore future directions related to the enforcement of youth access to tobacco laws. In addition, CDPH/CTCP-funded tobacco control projects will be encouraged to partner with local law enforcement agencies on planning and implementing their own roundtables.
