The Facts

About one in three children and one in four teens in California are estimated to be overweight* or at-risk for becoming overweight.** (These estimates are based on CalCHEEPS and CalTEENS prevalence data.)

Obesity is unique in that it is a chronic disease that is increasing at rates previously only seen with infectious diseases. Obesity is a leading cause of mortality, morbidity, disability, and discrimination in health care, education, and employment. Obesity is a public health challenge of near equal magnitude to that of tobacco use and exposure.

Our conference addresses childhood obesity from every possible angle… it includes clinical management and resources; research and evaluation; community perspectives (programs, coalitions, and the built environment); pre-school, school and after-school programs; policy (media advocacy, legislation, marketing, funding and food insecurity); and parents as role models, educators and advocates.

The Network

The California Childhood Obesity conference draws more than 1,400 participants, representing everyone from the healthcare professionals who work with children (physicians, nutritionists, dietitians, nurses, psychologists, and counselors) to healthcare policy makers. In addition, attendees include researchers, media, business and civic leaders, parks and recreation personnel, and the entire K-12 arena and early childhood education (food service personnel, physical education teachers, nutrition educators, teachers, child care providers, youth organizations, and after-school programs).

Our conference has attracted the most prominent resources on the subject. Previous keynote speakers have included Professor Gerard Hastings of the University of Strathclyde in Scotland; Dr. Robert Ross, President and Chief Executive Officer for The California Endowment; Dr. Marion Nestle, the Paulette Goddard Professor of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University; U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona; President of the American Diabetes Association, Dr. Francine Kaufman; and USDA Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services, Eric Bost. Conference workshop speakers have included physicians, dietitians, prestigious researchers, leaders from health care organizations, and policy makers – all of whom have one common goal – to reduce childhood obesity rates in California!

The Goals

We look forward to the opportunity to link our efforts with your organization at the 2007 California Childhood Obesity Conference. Your generous support will significantly contribute to the success of this event and collectively link our resources to address the childhood obesity epidemic. Your contribution will be a key component in supporting the 2007 conference goals of expanding our partnerships to make a positive impact on addressing California’s childhood obesity rates. Various communities are attempting to manage obesity in unique ways. Our conference goals are to expand these partnerships to increase coordination efforts, to build knowledge and skill base on pediatric overweight, to document progress made and outcomes achieved, and to continue to address childhood overweight as a major public health concern that demands attention and leadership from all. We need your support to reach these goals.

Become a sponsor today and make your commitment known! You can make a difference in California's childhood obesity rates!
