part of this year’s conference program. Attendees will have
the opportunity to register for the Miramar
Landfill or the Reliable Tires, Inc. field trips. Both field
trips will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2007
from 8:15 am – 12:00 pm. To ensure adequate
transportation, pre-registration is necessary
(see Conference Registration Form).
Miramar Landfill
(for LEAs and CIWMB Staff)
More than 1.4 million tons of waste is disposed at the
Miramar Landfill every year. Miramar landfill provides
an extensive materials recycling service to allow the
public to recycle many materials including clothing,
household goods, glass, plastic and metal containers.
Closed areas of the landfill are revegetated with native
plants cultivated in the Landfill Nursery. The nursery is
able to house and grow 30,000 plants at once. To help
support this revegetation effort, high quality mulch,
compost and wood chips are made at the Miramar
Greenery, and are also available to the public. Miramar
Landfill’s diverse operations provide attendees with an
informative view of a modern state of the art facility.
Attendees will tour the Miramar Landfill via bus,
stopping at several locations around the landfill to get a
closer look. The stops will highlight the following areas:
Native Species Nursery, Miramar Greenery-the Greens/Wood Waste Recycling/Composting Area, the Recycle/Buy-Back Center & Household Hazardous Waste Transfer
Facility and the Disposal Operations/Tipping Decks.
Please wear appropriate field clothing and footwear on the field trip. Sturdy shoes (without open toes), long pants, long sleeved shirts, sun glasses, and a hat for sun protection are recommended. Hard hats, safety vests and other field equipment are not necessary. A camera is optional.
Reliable Tires, Inc.
(for Tire Grantees and CIWMB Staff)
Attendees will tour Reliable Tires Inc., a waste tire
facility in San Diego. The visit will include a discussion
of the tire operation with the owner of Reliable Tires
Inc. There will be an opportunity for a question and
answer period. As part of the training, the grantee
inspectors will partake in a mock inspection and tire
counting exercise.
Please wear appropriate field clothing and footwear on the field trip. Steel toe boots/shoes, safety glasses, and safety vest are required. Notepad, pencil/pen, calculator, hat or sun visor are recommended. A camera is optional.
