Call For Presenters

The Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) and the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) invite you to submit a proposal for the 2009 Used Oil Recycling and Household Hazardous Waste Conference. This conference brings together local HHW program managers, nonprofit organizations, state agencies, and private businesses to share information and attend technical training concerning the appropriate management of hazardous household waste.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
We invite you to submit a proposal to present at the 2009 Used Oil Recycling and Household Hazardous Waste Conference. The conference will be organized into three workshop tracks. The tracks, their definition and selection criteria are identified within this document.
Desired presentations must meet specified conference goals, fit into themes and topics of the selection criteria and align with the description of conference tracks. Proposals must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. (PST) on September 4, 2009.
All selected workshop presenters are encouraged to participate in all planned conference activities and are required to pay the full conference registration fee of $220, regardless of participation level. All workshops will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 3-4, 2009, and are 90 minutes in length.
CONFERENCE GOALS
The 2009 Used Oil Recycling and Household Hazardous Waste Conference brings together a wide variety of public and private individuals and organizations working together to bridge gaps to promote progress, partnering with public entities and private businesses, and networking with colleagues. The overall goals of the conference are to:
- Build Unity and Strength. Provide a venue for sharing, learning, cross-training and networking for individuals interested in finding common ground among stakeholders within the federal, state, local jurisdictions, non-profits and businesses to furthering environmental issues.
- Share Best and Most Promising Practices in the Field. Present new technologies, proven approaches and successes that provide effective and targeted programs for local practitioners to put into practice in the community.
- Support Change Efforts. Offer opportunities to dialog on models for instituting systemic, programmatic and individual change in order to improve services, while discussing sustainability for what really works.
- View the Landscape. Discuss the current environment; investigate services and programs which directly affect conference attendees and those they serve.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Workshop proposals will be reviewed by the Conference Planning Committee for content, presenter’s experience, description, summary, and on how well they meet the following criteria:
- Demonstrate well-defined topics with focused objectives.
- Address the conference goals and fit within one of the indicated conference tracks.
- Introduce innovative programs and services designed that local jurisdictions can implement.
- Present informative materials or tools that apply to communities or organizations, and can be transferred into practice.
- Demonstrate how programs, processes and/or practices ensure California’s environmental health.
DESCRIPTION OF CONFERENCE TRACKS
- Hazardous Household Waste Track
This track includes basic workshops pertaining to the implementation of Household Hazardous Waste programs, regulatory changes that will affect your program and model programs to implement. - Used Oil Track
This track includes basic workshops pertaining to the implementation of Used Oil programs, legislative issues and grant issues. - Emerging Issues Track
This track includes topical issues such as green chemistry, extended producer responsibility, sharps and pharmaceutical, legislative issues and various innovative jurisdictional HHW programs.
Submission of a proposal does not guarantee participation in the conference program. The review committee reserves the right to assign accepted proposals to tracks other than the one originally applied for.
All submissions must be received by 5:00 p.m. (PST) on September 4, 2009.
