Sponsor Information
On Friday, June 8, the Center for California Studies and the Capital Fellows Alumni
will be holding an evening reception and dinner to commemorate the anniversaries
of their signature programs:
50th Anniversary of the Creation of the Jesse M. Unruh Assembly Fellowship Program;
35th Anniversary of the Senate Fellows Program;
25th Anniversary of the Center for California Studies;
22nd Anniversary of the Executive Fellowship Program; and
10th Anniversary of the Judicial Administration Fellowship Program. |
With more than 1,300 men and women having served as Capital Fellows, it comes as no surprise that more than
half of California’s 120 legislators have former fellows currently working in their offices.
Most fellows, at the completion of their year, realize the life-changing experiences they have gained and appreciate
how the fellowship programs have launched their careers. In fact, many fellows feel a strong need to give back.
Recognizing this, the Alumni Board is launching an alumni initiative at the June 8 celebration which will benefit the
fellowship programs far into the future. Although the goal of this initiative is to develop an effective and vital
support network for the generations of Fellows to come, the objectives are many:
- Promote outreach efforts to keep the population of Fellows diverse in every way.
- Provide scholarships.
- Offer needs-based stipends for professional clothing and/or housing for incoming Fellows.
- Make available alumni-hosted forums and events in different regions of the state.
- Create ways to encourage and further careers.
- Create a mentoring network across the state.
- Develop Fellow-sponsored service and philanthropic projects.
By joining a select group of sponsors, you will do several things:
- Become part of the Center and Capital Fellows community which includes hundreds of former fellows
who each day impact governance and public policies in California.
- Foster an ongoing network of professionals, leaders and innovators in different fields, who have
“graduated” from the fellows programs.
- Support the efforts of the Center and the Capital Fellows Programs to recruit into state government
and public service public-minded individuals whose vision is expanding California’s leadership capacity
and contributing to sound and thoughtful policymaking.
Why Sponsor This Celebration?
There are many reasons to support this unique Anniversary Celebration. Proceeds will benefit the Capital
Fellows Alumni Affiliate and enable it to support current and future Fellows. The Alumni can be especially
helpful in guaranteeing that the Capital Fellows Programs remain accessible regardless of a Fellow’s income.
Another reason is the success of the Center and the Capital Fellows Programs in achieving their goal of
“preparing people for public service and leadership.” Consider these facts:
- Six of every ten legislators employ former Fellows or have current Fellows in their offices.
- Six of eight constitutional offices, including the Governor, have former Fellows on their top staffs.
- Twenty-nine Senators or 73 percent of all Senators employ former Fellows or have current Fellows in their offices.
- Forty-two Assembly Members, or 53 percent of all Assembly Members employ former Fellows or have current Fellows in their offices.
- Half of the Senate’s standing committees and a fifth of the Assembly’s employ former Fellows or have
current Fellows in their offices.
- Former or current Fellows work on the staffs of three of the four top Legislative leaders.
- Three of five members of the State Board of Equalization are either former Fellows themselves or employ
former Fellows on their staffs.
- Former Fellows can be found in 34 different executive branch agencies as well as nine judicial offices
or courts.
In short, you cannot be active in policymaking in California without running into former Fellows in positions
of great importance and influence. The 1,300 men and women who have been Fellows are as diverse in their
backgrounds, occupations and attitudes as the State is, but they are all united in a deep appreciation of the
programs that started their careers.
Please join us for an evening of fun! Reunite with the generations of alumni with a common vision!
