We invite all State departments to be active supporters and participants in “The State as a Model Employer
Symposium and Career Fair,” being held October 17-18, 2007 in Sacramento. By attending and supporting
these events, State leaders have the opportunity to show that California is a model for creating workplaces
that effectively leverage the skills of workers with disabilities.
Who should attend?
- The Symposium is for those who are currently involved in the selection, hiring, and retention of state employees.
- Managers and supervisors

- Reasonable Accommodation staff

- The Career Fair should be attended by recruitment staff and individuals with disabilities who are interested in employment opportunities with the State of California.
Symposium Goals
- To educate State human resources (HR) personnel on equal employment and reasonable accommodation responsibilities in the examination, selection, and employment of individuals with disabilities. This includes removing architectural and attitudinal barriers; ensuring employee training accessibility; complying with anti-discrimination laws, such as the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); and establishing effective employment policies and practices.
- To increase HR employees’ knowledge, skills, and abilities to ensure persons with disabilities equal
access to positions and career advancement opportunities in State government.
Career Fair Goals
- To provide career information, employment opportunities, résumé assistance, tips for effective interviews, job search assistance, and tips for effective use of the Limited Examination and Appointment Program (LEAP) process.
- To substantially increase hiring and retention of persons with disabilities in State government.
- To increase the number of persons with disabilities qualified for the State exam process.
