Radicalization not only threatens our society from the back rooms of bookstores and cafes, but from behind the cement walls and barbed wire which houses our State’s criminals. This is a dynamic situation in which recruitment to extremist behavior can easily be facilitated by the availability of an audience of individuals who may already be experiencing disenfranchisement and isolation from the population at large, and may have a predisposition to violence. Experts on this panel will speak to this growing issue, and present a case in which recruitment to radicalization began within the walls of our prisons, but where the violent nature and destructive intentions of these recruits only became evident when returned to our open society.
