Continuing Education receives $100,000 Osher grant to develop lifelong learning institute

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute courses starting soon at CSUS!

The College of Continuing Education at California State University, Sacramento has established an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) to provide educational opportunities to persons 50 and older.

The full range of fall course offerings will be showcased in a free OLLI Information Session held on Thursday, July 29th from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at Napa Hall on the CSUS Campus. Individuals will have the opportunity to meet staff and instructors and learn about the courses available through the OLLI program. "This fall, participants will have the opportunity to experience the local theatre scene, learn about the Jazz Age through the novels of F. Scott Fitzgerald, explore the history and culture of Cuba, assess their financial portfolios, and adopt a commonsense, effective approach to fitness and weight loss," explained Elizabeth Hough, executive director of the CSUS OLLI.

"At CSUS, our goal is to build a lively intellectual community of people aged 50+ that helps participants to prepare for life transitions, enrich their personal and professional lives, and actively engage with the larger regional community," said Hough.

"The research shows that people who stay mentally and physically active live longer and healthier lives. Fifty-year-olds are more active; people are starting their careers in their fifties and following dreams that they are passionate about," Celia J. Esquivel, associate state director for AARP California, notes.

The Institute is funded by a grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation of San Francisco. Additional support for individual course offerings is provided by the B Street Theatre, California Musical Theatre, the CSUS College of Continuing Education, the CSUS Department of Theatre and Dance, the Sacramento Theatre Company, and Sutter Health.
