This course in project management was designed specifically for Caltrans professional staff. It presents general concepts and techniques for project management of projects during all phases of the highway project lifecycle. Topics include setting project objectives, collecting and analyzing project status data, adapting the project plan to resolve issues, and communicating status. Emphasis is on project scope, schedule, and cost. This is the Prerequisite for the Caltrans Project Management Certificate Program.

Project Human Resource Management

This course presents concepts and techniques required in making the most effective use of the people involved with the project. It includes all the project stakeholders, sponsors, customers, individual contributors, and others involved in delivery of Caltrans projects. Students also learn about Caltrans organizational planning and organizational structures, project staff acquisition and project team building. The course also provides a wide range of skills in dealing with different personalities. This includes teaching skills & techniques to become more proactive, encouraging and motivating as well as developing skills to become a good listener, good communicator and responsible. Students will also learn methods to measure performance and reward achievements, conflict resolution & negotiation.
Project Procurement Management

The purpose of this course is to enable project managers and other project team members to learn how to procure and administer external resources for Caltrans Capital Projects. At the end of this course, participants will understand and be able to apply guidelines set by the Project Management Institute's (PMI®) processes for procurement planning, solicitation planning, solicitation, source selection, contract administration and contract close-out.

This hands-on practice-based course caps the Caltrans core Project Management Certificate courses by pulling together the knowledge and skills gained in other project management knowledge areas. Participants will learn the application of principals of project management using a full-scale Caltrans project. Participants will be provided a roadmap to guide them from project problem statement to initial project plan development to project plan execution and change control to project close-out. This is the final class in the Caltrans Project Management Certificate Program.
