Program Philosophy
The ELI believes that all students learning English should be given the opportunity to excel in a safe and encouraging environment. The ELI encourages autonomous, self-activated learning from all students. We support the study of authentic, meaningful language learning. The teachers at the ELI are enthusiastic, encouraging, and support each student’s English language learning progress and development.
Overview
The English Language Institute at California State University, Sacramento provides international learners with opportunities to obtain an excellent education while becoming familiar with people and cultures from around the world. Located in the capital of California, Sacramento State is a safe, friendly campus that offers a variety of educational and recreational opportunities.
English Language Curriculum
The ELI prepares students with the skills needed for successful study in an American university environment. The curriculum emphasizes intensive language learning in which students develop communication skills for professional and social settings in all areas of ESL (grammar, writing, reading, vocabulary, speaking, listening, pronunciation). Classes are directed at serious, studious, self-directed students with academic and/or professional goals.
ELI Objectives
- Help students develop the skills necessary to acquire fluency in English as a Second Language
- Introduce students to various aspects of American culture and society
- Prepare students to communicate effectively in English
- Transition students from an intensive English program to an academic program
- Provide general English skills for business, travel and educational purposes.
