Program Summary
The next generation of successful California government leaders will be those who know how to embrace and implement positive government transformation and build cross-functional and interagency relationships.  These relationships will be key building blocks for our future leaders.  This program will expand the practical application of the skills required to be successful in today’s changing business climate.  Leaders will be challenged to develop and adopt statewide best practices, create interagency solutions, and develop relationships to implement and sustain government transformation efforts.

 

1. What makes this leadership program unique?

The Leadership for the Government Executive program is endorsed by the Department of Personnel Administration.  General competencies taught in Leadership for the Government Executive are linked to competencies identified by the HR Modernization Project as those required to perform effectively as leaders in state government.  

 

Leadership for the Government Executive provides a one-of-a-kind experience for participants through a distinctive delivery style.  LGE transforms the classroom learning experience by using individual learning strategies, group discussions, and distinguished guest speakers to allow leaders to address real world problems with realistic solutions.  Delivery of the program focuses on topics significant to The State of California such as:  enterprise-wide thinking, workforce development, succession planning and strategic thinking. The program also connects key skills with visionary statewide initiatives such as the FI$CAL Project, HR Modernization Project, and the 21st Century Project.

 

2.  Is Leadership for the Government Executive recognized by the State of California as a program of choice to train current and future civil service leaders?

Yes.  Leadership for the Government Executive is the only competency-based training program of its kind for California government leaders to be endorsed by the California Department of Personnel Administration, the State Personnel Board and the Department of General Services.  The general competencies taught in LGE were identified as those required to perform effectively as leaders in state government.  LGE incorporates direct learning application on the job through pre- and post training assessments.  Attendees set measurable goals and objectives before training that will affect positive, strategic change in their organizations thus facilitating the calculation of measurable return on investment for the program. 

 

3.  What topics will be covered in this certificate program?

Leadership for the Government Executive focuses on key executive and management issues such as:  Building a Mission, Vision, Values and Goals; Building a Service Culture; Organizational Change and Overcoming Resistance; Coaching, Mentoring and Motivating Others; Teams and Teamwork; Leadership Communication; Measuring Success.

 

4.  Who is eligible to be nominated for this program?

This is a leadership program for executives and upper-level managers.  Individuals responsible for strategic planning and policy setting across agency and departmental lines are ideal candidates for nomination.  Think of key managers and programs in regards to succession plans.  Nominate those who will benefit from the leadership curriculum and those who are in a leadership position or poised to be in the near future.  We encourage enrollment from all program areas (business and information technology).     

 

5.  Why should I nominate someone for this certificate program?

Today’s business climate is one of government transformation that embraces a service culture. Many are not familiar with how to build this service culture or sustain it for long-term success.  This program is for those who want to be a successful leader in today’s environment of government transformation and those who want to grow new leaders as part of their succession planning effort to sustain long-term success.

 

6.  How do I nominate someone for this certificate program?

Complete the online nomination form on the Sacramento State, College of Continuing Education website at www.cce.csus.edu/lgeAll prospective participants must be nominated by their manager, sponsored by their director or a director’s designee and accepted into the program. 

 

7.  When is the nomination deadline?

Nominations will be accepted from July 6, 2009 through September 11, 2009.

 

8.  How many nominations will be accepted per organization?

There are two cohorts with a total of 50 participants. There are no limitations on the number of nominations from an organization.  Nominations are encouraged, as those who are not accepted may apply again for future sessions.

 

9.  What is the cost for this program?

The cost is $4,779 per person.

 

10.  What does the program cost include?

The program includes:

  • Courses that are held once a month, for a full-day session, over the course of seven months (49 hours of instruction).
  • 4.9 continuing education units.
  • Program materials.
  • Pre and post-program Leadership Practices Inventory assessment.
  • Continental breakfast and afternoon snacks for each classroom day.
  • Graduation celebration.
  • Certificate of Completion.

 

11.  What is expected of me once I am accepted to the program?

Upon acceptance to Leadership for the Government Executive, each participant will complete a Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) prior to the first class meeting.  The LPI is a 360-degree assessment designed to measure specific leadership behaviors and contribute toward the participant’s development as a  leader.  In addition to the LPI, participants are asked to bring their completed Individual Development Plan (IDP) and a completed Conversation Guide to the first class.  Individual Development Plan templates approved by individual departments or agencies are acceptable.  Conversation Guides are provided by the program and are designed to facilitate a conversation between participants and their manager regarding organizational goals and measurements.    

 
12.  What if I miss a class?

Attendance for class sessions is highly encouraged.  Participants must attend all seven courses in order to be awarded a certificate of participation in Leadership for the Government Executive certificate program.  

If participants must miss a course, the missed course can be made up in a concurrent cohort, if available, or in a cohort the following year.  A missed course must be completed within a 12 -month period from the date of the missed course.  

 

Participants who miss one course will be allowed to participate in their cohort-based graduation but will receive a certificate of participation only upon completion of the missed course.
