Course Curriculum


Strategic Management
Course Hours: 7 (.7 CEUs)
Participants will discuss the goals and learning objectives of The Portfolio and the Management for the Government Professional program in the context of larger statewide initiatives. The importance of workforce development, succession planning, strategic thinking and their evolving role as manager will be explored.

Workforce Development
Course Hours: 7 (.7 CEUs)
This course builds on the foundation of the previous course, Strategic Management, by examining how individual and group behaviors can lead to either mediocre or extraordinary results. Effective management strategies are explored for developing a diverse and high performing work force.

Strategic Planning
Course Hours: 7 (.7 CEUs)
This course is designed to provide the core managerial skills needed to deliver results at a unit and enterprise-wide level. Tools for strategic planning, resource allocation and collaboration are practiced primarily in the context of implementing business processes and technology solutions.

Performance Metrics
Course Hours: 7 (.7 CEUs)
This course prepares senior managers to create key performance indicators and monitor results in a balanced scorecard to adapt plans and resources to meet organizational goals in dynamic contexts. Participants learn methods for tracking progress on change initiatives and quantifying Return on Investment (ROI).

Change Management
Course Hours: 7 (.7 CEUs)
This course prepares senior managers to accelerate the adoption of changes within their units and across organizational jurisdictions. Participants learn methods for strategically transforming resistance into engagement across diverse stakeholders.

Strategic Thinking and Innovation
Course Hours: 7 (.7 CEUs)
This course builds on the foundation of the previous course, Change Management, to prepare senior managers to demonstrate more strategic thinking to recognize and implement unit and system wide innovations. Participants learn methods for facilitating a team’s creative and critical thinking skills.

Communication and Coaching
Course Hours: 7 (.7 CEUs)
This course prepares senior managers to communicate and market organizational changes more powerfully with diverse individuals and teams. Participants also learn techniques to coach staff effectively for workforce development and accountability.

Conflict Management
Course Hours: 7 (.7 CEUs)
This course prepares senior managers to facilitate productive levels of professional conflict among individual staff and in team meetings. Methods for principle centered negotiation and resolution of interpersonal employee conflicts will also be provided.
