Program Summary
Management for the Government Professional brings to life important senior-level managerial concepts such as delivering results and understanding the budget and legislative processes as well as collaborating across agency and department lines.  Participants examine strategies for carrying out the mission and vision of their agency or department.  Management for the Government Professional provides California with a practical delivery vehicle for supporting these important, future thinking concepts.

 

1. What makes this management program unique?

The Management for the Government Professional program is endorsed by the Department of Personnel Administration.  General competencies taught in Management for the Government Professional are linked to competencies identified by the HR Modernization Project as those required to perform effectively as managers in state government.  


Management for the Government Professional provides a one-of-a-kind experience for participants through a dynamic delivery model which includes a pre- and post training assessment.  MGP brings to life important senior-level managerial concepts such as delivering results, understanding the budget and legislative process as well as agency-wide decision-making and department-wide collaboration through case studies, guest speakers, outside readings, and individual projects.  The program also connects key skills with visionary statewide initiatives such as Succession Planning, the FI$CAL Project, HR Modernization Project, and the 21st Century Project.

 

2.  Is Management for the Government Professional recognized by the State of California as a program of choice to train current and future civil service managers? 

Yes.  Management for the Government Professional is the only competency-based training program of its kind for California government mangers to be endorsed by the California Department of Personnel Administration, the State Personnel Board and the Department of General Services.  The general competencies taught in MGP were identified as those required to perform effectively as managers in state government.  MGP incorporates direct learning application on the job through pre- and post training assessments.  Attendees set measurable goals and objectives before training that will affect positive, strategic change in their organizations thus facilitating the calculation of measurable return on investment for the program. 

 

3. What topics will be covered in this certificate program?

Management for the Government Professional focuses on key management issues such as:  Strategic Management, Workforce Development, Strategic Planning, Performance Metrics, Change Management, Strategic Thinking and Innovation, Communication and Coaching, and Conflict Management.

 

4. Who is eligible to apply for this program?

Potential participants are designated managers from the business and program branches of agencies or departments as well as designated managers from the information technology programs.  Individuals with a vision for enterprise-wide thinking, strong potential for upward mobility and experience carrying out their organization’s mission and vision are ideal candidates for acceptance to this program.    

 

5.Why should I apply for this certificate program?

Today’s business climate is one of government transformation that embraces a service culture. Many are not familiar with how to build this service culture or sustain it for long-term success.  California’s next generation of successful government leaders will be individuals who can embrace and implement transformation and build cross-functional interagency relationships.

 

6. How do I apply for this certificate program?

Complete the online application form on the Sacramento State, College of Continuing Education website at www.cce.csus.edu/mgp.

 

7.  When is the application deadline?

Applications will be accepted from July 6, 2009 through September 25, 2009.

 

8.  How many applications will be accepted per organization?

There is one cohort with a total of 25 participants. There are no limitations on the number of applications from an organization.  Applications are encouraged, as those who are not accepted may apply again for future sessions.
 

9.  What is the cost for this program?

The cost is $3,610 per person.

 

10.  What does the program cost include?

The program includes:

  • Courses that are held twice a month, for a full-day session, over the course of four months (56 hours of instruction).
  • 5.6 continuing education units.
  • Program materials.
  • Continental breakfast and afternoon snacks for each classroom day.
  • A pre- and post-program Leadership Practices Inventory assessment.
  • Graduation Celebration.
  • Certificate of Completion.

 

11.  What is expected of me once I am accepted to the program?

Upon acceptance to Management for the Government Professional, each participant will complete a Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) prior to the first class meeting.  The LPI is a 360-degree assessment designed to measure specific leadership behaviors and contribute toward the participant’s development as a leader.  In addition to the LPI, participants are asked to bring their completed Individual Development Plan (IDP) and a completed Conversation Guide to the first class.  Individual Development Plan templates approved by individual departments or agencies are acceptable.  Conversation Guides are provided by the program and are designed to facilitate a conversation between participants and their manager regarding organizational goals and measurements.    

 

12.  What if I miss a class?

Attendance for class sessions is highly encouraged.  Participants must attend all eight courses in order to be awarded a certificate of completion in the Management for the Government Professional certificate program.  

If participants must miss a course, the missed course can be made up in a concurrent cohort, if available, or in a cohort the following year.  A missed course must be completed within a 12-month period from the date of the missed course.  

 

Participants who miss one course will be allowed to participate in their cohort-based graduation but will receive a certificate of participation only upon completion of the missed course.
