High school students got a taste of what it takes to be a firefighter and paramedic during the 2017 Fire Academy, part of the Summer Academies for High School Students program at Sacramento State.

Students met firefighters on the job at different fire stations, toured the training academy for firefighters and went through a rappelling exercise. They also earned their CPR certification during the one-week career academy.

Jason Hemler, who is a Sacramento fire captain and the director of the Paramedic Program at Sacramento State, led the academy.
