More about the Certificate and Apprenticeship
CCE's Senior Program Developer Babette Jimenez Provides Details

Professional Certificate and Apprenticeship

The Workforce Development Professional Certificate Program provides the classroom training to be a leader in the workforce development industry.

The Workforce Development Professional Apprenticeship Program adds more than 2,000 hours of on-the-job training that expands the role of workforce practitioners.

The certificate program includes human-centered design (HCD) customer service skills, project management, leadership training, business development and communication skills. ”What’s unique about this program is that the content has been customized to apply to workforce development professionals,” says Babette Jimenez, CCE’s senior program developer.

As an example, “working with a population of dislocated workers and individuals with barriers to employment – such as physical or mental disabilities and felony convictions – requires a specific set of skills,” Jimenez explains. Participants will learn to “ascertain the emotional mode” of a situation and adapt their communication skills to the environment.

The educational curriculum “was vetted through subject-matter experts to ensure the relevancy and accuracy of the content,” Jimenez adds.

Participants will learn how to:

  • form relationships and initiatives with employers, labor, industry and education
  • track policy changes and anticipate workforce trends
  • recruit a network of job seekers and trainers to match an employer’s needs

Participants will complete:

  • 132 hours of class instruction
  • 12 additional hours outside of class to prepare their capstone presentation

Graduates will receive:

  • a certificate from Sacramento State – for completing the required 12 courses
  • 13.2 continuing education units (CEUs)
  • a transcript noting their CEUs.

The certificate program takes 9 months to complete.

The certificate can be earned by itself or in conjunction with an employer’s apprenticeship program.

Classes take place on weeknights and/or Friday afternoons at the College of Continuing Education on the Sacramento State campus.

Apprenticeship Program

Workforce development professionals can augment their education with the Workforce Development Professional Apprenticeship Program. In addition to earning the certificate, workforce practitioners take on new responsibilities as they complete 2,080 hours of on-the-job training.

“The fact that this program has been approved by the State Division of Apprenticeship Standards makes it unique, in that it allows the participants to learn a skill or technique in the classroom one evening and put it to work in their job center the very next morning,” Jimenez says.

For longtime workforce development professionals, the apprenticeship deepens their education, she explains, “giving them the opportunity to understand the history of the industry, why certain regulations are in place, as well as presenting them with the knowledge and the skills to challenge the status quo to go above and beyond.”

Apprentices will complete:

  • Workforce Development Professional Certificate Program (in its entirety)
  • 2,080 hours of on-the-job training

Graduates will receive:

  • a certificate from Sacramento State – for completing the required 12 courses
  • 13.2 continuing education units (CEUs)

  • a job classification increase
