Marcia Durst owns Durst Event Strategies, and joined Sacramento State in 2014 as an instructor in the Meeting and Event Planning Certificate Program at the College of Continuing Education. “It was a great opportunity to share my experience, to help people breaking into the field or just getting started. It was a natural fit for me.”

“The program is very well known in the events community, which is important for students to know.”

The program includes field trips, guest speakers, and “an emphasis on scenarios and lessons that participants can apply,” Marcia says. “They will come away equipped to handle a lot of the event planning tasks in a real job situation.”

Students start building their first professional relationships through the program. “I think in a lot of industries networking is important. But in this industry, it is so much about the relationships you build,” Marcia says. “They are starting to build those relationships from the very beginning and it will serve them well.”

Before opening her meeting and event planning company, Marcia held positions with The American Red Cross and Meg Perry Associates Public Relations. She holds a degree in communication studies from Sacramento State and is a certified meeting professional.

Marcia serves as Vice President of Education for Meeting Professionals International-Sacramento Sierra Nevada chapter. She served on the editorial advisory board of Northern California Meetings & Events Magazine and the local organizing committee for the Amgen Tour of California.

Marcia enjoys traveling to destinations near and far and is working diligently on perfecting her champagne sabering skills.
