Michael Washington

Professor Michael Washington joined Sacramento State in 2014 as an adjunct professor in the College of Education’s Graduate and Professional Studies program, teaching courses in education leadership. In 2016, he developed curriculum and began teaching in the Bachelor of Science in Career and Technical Studies (CTS) degree completion program.

Washington is an educational sociologist and qualitative researcher with a background in post-secondary education, sociology of education and alternative education, “emphasizing psycho-social aspects that hinder or promote academic achievement,” he says. His research and teaching interests include “culturally relevant pedagogy, andragogy, educational leadership, achievement gaps, and the engagement and retention or marginalized populations in post-secondary education.”

Washington will earn his doctorate in social justice education through a joint program at Claremont Graduate University and San Diego State University. He earned his master’s degree in educational leadership and policy studies and his bachelor’s degree in adult and vocational education, both from Sacramento State. He believes in working with and through people and communities and is committed to social justice efforts that empower students facing educational challenges in an ever-changing world.

Washington has published journal articles and book chapters, and has presented at several conferences nationwide, including the American Educational Research Association, the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education, the National Association for Multicultural Education, the Ethnographic and Qualitative Research Conference, the Universal Design for Learning Conference, the Council for the Study of Community Colleges, the Adult Education Research Conference, as well as Canada’s CONGRESS of the Humanities & Social Sciences Canadian Educational Conferences.

Washington is a native of Sacramento. Before his career in education, he coached and participated in collegiate track and field and worked in information technology. He is also an artist, musician and enjoys smooth jazz and ethnic food.
