In 2021, Sac State’s College of Continuing Education (CCE) paused its Judicial Administration certificate program

Five years later, the program has returned with the same goal as before: to provide students with an opportunity to learn from leaders in the California Judicial Branch.

One of the few programs of its kind in the United States, students learn the skills necessary to successfully practice judicial administration duties. Once they complete the program, graduates go on to leadership and career development opportunities within the Judicial Branch.

The following testimonies of four alumni from the program speak to the program’s relevance and impact on the California Judicial Branch. The first testimony showcases how it provides Practical Skills & Experience.

“My classmates were like-minded court professionals and the faculty brought practical court leadership experience directly into the classroom,” said Jennifer Tan, an alum of the program. “It was truly rewarding.”

In the case of Cheyenne Schaad, who echoed Tan’s thoughts, her testimony reflects the program’s value in Leadership & Personal Growth

“I entered this program to deepen my knowledge of the court system and learn more about effective leadership. What I gained went far beyond that,” Schaad said. “Through the relationships I built with my classmates and professors, I developed greater confidence in myself and in my ability to lead. Those experiences encouraged me to pursue a leadership role within the court. Since graduating, I have been promoted to Assistant Court Executive Officer — an accomplishment that would not have been possible without this program and the growth it inspired.”

To be prepared for the course, interested students are strongly encouraged to be employed in the California Judicial Branch at the analyst level or above.

As for Heather Pugh, the program played a role in Enhancing One’s Own Network.

“The Judicial Administration program is invaluable in preparing aspiring court administrators to face the challenges in court leadership roles,” alum Heather Pugh said. ”In addition to expanding the students’ knowledge in the field, the program also provides the opportunity to network with others working in the judicial branch. These networks last beyond the program and provide opportunities for future collaboration, mentorship, and friendship. I would highly recommend the program to anyone interested in a career in court administration.”

Echoing Pugh’s takeaway from the program, Charmae Caracas also speaks to the program’s Relationship Building & Academic Rigor.

“The Judicial Administration Certificate Program has been instrumental in my success in court management. The academic rigor challenged me to think critically and strategically, while the relationships I built with faculty and peers created a strong professional network that continues to support my growth,” Caracas expressed. “The projects and assignments were directly aligned with the current state of the judicial branch, equipping me with practical, relevant skills that I use every day in my leadership role.”
