Original Story

On April 8th, a student in the Master of Public Health (MPH) program offered by the College of Continuing Education (CCE) will face off against six other Sacramento State University students in CSU’s annual Grad Slam competition

Launched in 2021, Grad Slam is a statewide research competition celebrating the creativity that takes place at the graduate level across every CSU. Students present a three-minute speech, along with one visual. The emphasis of the competition is on communicating the research rather than the technical aspects of the research itself.

Jenn Raley Miller decided to enter, utilizing her research regarding the journey of adults seeking ADHD diagnosis.

“I filmed a three-minute video on Zoom and sent it to OGS [the Office of Graduate Studies] – and was so pleased that it was accepted,” she exclaimed.

After a career in human resources, Miller decided to make an adjustment to work on systems change for neurodivergent populations with CCE’s MPH program piqued her interest for the way it emphasized policy aspects.

“This program is more high-value than the online programs I considered – it’s affordable and convenient, and the in-person aspect is invaluable,” she says, adding that the program is “thoughtfully designed to provide a well-rounded foundation of the different competencies needed for public health practitioners and researchers. We get a chance to practice those skills in the academic environment before applying them to real-world situations. I feel those academic foundations are transferrable to other professions and disciplines as well.”

If Miller advances past the Sac State Grad Slam competition, she will go on to represent the campus at the CSU Grad Slam competition on May 9, 2025.

“It would be an honor to represent Sac State in a statewide competition,” she says. “Equally important to me, whether I proceed in the competition or not, is the opportunity for others to learn about the important topic of Adult ADHD.”
