Sacramento State’s College of Continuing Education (CCE) is expanding its portfolio of workforce development programs with the launch of its new Grant Writing Certificate Program, designed to equip professionals with the practical skills needed to research, write, and manage successful grant proposals.

Ideal for professionals working in nonprofits, government agencies, education, healthcare, and community organizations, as well as those looking to enter the field, the fully online certificate program consists of four courses totaling 70 hours of instruction. Participants may enroll in individual courses or complete the full certificate, learning a structured seven-step grant writing process that covers everything from identifying funding opportunities and developing compelling needs statements to preparing budgets, managing awarded grants, and building lasting relationships with funders. Upon successful completion, participants earn a Certificate of Participation and Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

The curriculum includes:

  • Introduction to Grant Writing
  • Building a Competitive Application for Funding – Part 1
  • Building a Competitive Application for Funding – Part 2
  • Grant Management: Beyond the Proposal

Courses are offered online in a fully asynchronous format, providing the flexibility working professionals need to advance their careers while balancing personal and professional commitments.

Dean Dr. Jenni Murphy sees the new program as another example of CCE’s commitment to meeting regional workforce needs while expanding educational access.

“As a leader in adult education, CCE has long served as Sac State’s incubator for innovation, equity, and access,” Dr. Murphy said. “We understand the challenges adult learners face, and we are committed to building systems and partnerships that remove barriers and open doors. Together, we’re shaping not just individual lives, but the workforce and communities of our region.”

Whether participants are seeking to strengthen an organization’s fundraising efforts, launch a career in grant writing, or develop new professional skills, the Grant Writing Certificate Program provides practical, real-world instruction that prepares learners to compete for funding and create lasting community impact.
